How to live a good life?

Writer: Ejerson BalabasEjerson Balabas

Follow this simple exercise:

  1. What do you believe you need to live a good life? List as many and be as specific as you can. Below are some examples:

    • I need to have more energy.

    • I need to heal.

    • I need to grow.

    • I need to experience new things, people, culture, etc.

    • I need to go on an adventure.

    • I need to be fulfilled.

  2. Does one need support another need? Review and order your needs from a dependency perspective. Below is an example:

    • I need to be fulfilled.

      • I need to have more energy.

      • I need to heal.

        • I need to grow.

        • I need to experience new things, people, culture, etc.

        • I need to go on an adventure.

  3. What did you come up with?

    • The goal is not perfection. The goal is to find your highest need as a person. What you need is uniquely yours. Try your best to be as honest as possible. Your list should give you an idea of what to do next. I would love to see what you come up with. Please add them as comments to this post or send me an email at edgedevelops@gmail.com. I appreciate your willingness to share. 🙂

Some additional information

Create a system that works for you. Only you can know what works and what doesn’t.

When someone swears by something and claims that it is the most effective, run away from that advice. The goal is to become more self-aware and discern our needs, wants, and methods.

The better you are at devising and sticking to that system, the more likely your desired outcome is to be guaranteed.

For instance, I am currently building a creation system that allows for consistent release of highly engaging, valuable, and actionable content. I do not attach to a specific way of doing things because only I know the context I face. The goal is to be exposed to other people’s ideas continually and to consolidate helpful ideas and filter out unhelpful ones.

There is a lot of content from people claiming to know everything, and that if you follow their system, everything will magically fall into place.

Beware of highly certain statements because they often involve oversimplifications.

I am not against simplicity. I am against simplicity for the sake of ease.

In nature, variation is the norm. Everything exists in a spectrum or continuous range. As a society, we’ve become addicted to absolutes. This addiction absolves us from taking accountability for our lack of imagination or courage. The cure is becoming infinitely curious and willing to learn and change.

If we strive for comfort, we will find it. Did you feel comfortable today?

If we strive for fulfillment, we will find it. Did you feel fulfilled today?

What does it mean to be fulfilled?

It means you are satisfied.

What does it mean to be satisfied?

It means you had enough, according to your standards and not someone else's.

What does it mean to have enough?

It means you are full.

What does it mean to be full?

Fullness is our own perceived, individually set limit. This can mean three plates at the buffet or one plate. It’s subjective. However, there is an invisible, moving line between pleasure and pain. You are the only one who can notice that. The better you are at noticing and controlling that ever-elusive line, the better you are at understanding yourself. The better you know yourself, the more likely you are to conquer yourself. The moment you begin working to conquer yourself is when you realize how much power you have. Then work to make a difference because it is the right thing to do.

Everyone struggles, and it is in these struggles that we find our strength. We are remembered for how we made someone feel. It is in our interactions that we leave our mark. It is in our creation and those touched by it that we transcend beyond ourselves.
